“For me it is all about just helping my neighbors and fellow business owners,” Hall said.
Hall said that her motivation for serving on the board is devotion to the community. They have owned the business for 11 years now. Hall and her husband Cal are the owners and operators of Cal’s Auto Repair in Overton. She is nearing the end of her second term on the board. Lois Hall is the current Chairwoman of the MVTAB. We are working on it, but we know it is just going to take a while.” “The problems are being looked at and we are trying to resolve them. “It is kind of a balancing act and Commissioner (Marilyn) Kirkpatrick has done a good job of getting us more money than probably what we are entitled to,” Burris said. The same dollars that are being proposed for certain local flood control structures, if employed in Las Vegas, would benefit 100,000 to 200,000 people, he said. Yet everyone wants to build them all at once.”īurris points out that even if you count both Moapa Valley and Moapa, there is less than 10,000 people in the community. But these are $30 million projects! With our tax base we don’t even pay for 10 percent of that. “We have detention basins in the queue right now,” he said. And with a small community, it will take time, he said. “I think that I can do a better job of taking our citizens concerns and then make them be heard at the appropriate levels to get things resolved.”Įven so, Burris calls for patience with county officials and the commissioners in meeting the needs of Moapa Valley.įor example in the area of flood control, Burris acknowledges that there is a lot of work to do. “I’ve been able to develop relationships with county officials which allows me to better advocate for the community on things,” Burris said. He said that the big difference in his second term is the open line of communication he has been able to establish with County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick and the county staff. “It is really amazing.”īurris has served two, 2-year terms on the MVTAB.
“This is one of the most welcoming communities I have ever seen,” Burris said.
Attracted by the small-town friendliness of the community, Burris and his wife eventually moved their family here to enjoy a better quality of life. According to state law, in the absence of a slate of candidates, the decision goes back to the County Commission to appoint TAB members.īut this year, there were enough who filed in the Moapa Valley township to allow for a local election. That is because not enough people have filed with the Clark County Elections Department for candidacy. But none of the northeast Clark County communities has ever taken the option. Since 2015, state law has given unincorporated communities the option to elect their TABs. Closely related to category one, except this group grows pot only for themselves (It’s strictly medicinal – treatment for their cocaine and heroin addictions).For the first time ever, the residents of the lower Moapa Valley communities of Overton and Logandale will be offered a binding choice on the November general election ballot of who will represent them on their Town Advisory Board (TAB). Representatives of the Mormon religion, they wander two-by-two through the wilderness, often thinking back to the great one man conversion of ’89. These live in the “high-end” district of the trailer park.

Typically living in portable trailers, for no other reason than to shake them wildly when the fevered dreams come. Television is their life, even though they’re been so doped up by category one that they haven’t registered anything since the final episode of “M*A*S*H”. Strangely, they don’t seem to care that their plants are clearly visible, and poking through every orifice of the trailer. Trailer park tenants can be broken down into five categories. The fact of the matter is, they attract the dregs of society like a giant porch light attracting moths. Contrary to what the billboards may tell you, the trailer parks aren’t populated by benevolent seniors who play golf in their back yards, and choose low-income housing out of pure humility.
